This dog was potentially exposed to another dog that tested positive for Canine
Distemper Virus. Canine Distemper Virus is a highly contagious and potentially
life-threatening disease in dogs that causes coughing, sneezing, nasal discharge,
ocular discharge, lethargy, fever, and reduced appetite; vomiting, diarrhea, muscle
tremors, seizures, and paralysis can be seen in more severe cases. Vaccination is
highly effective for prevention of Canine Distemper Virus, and every dog entering the
shelter is vaccinated upon intake unless they have known vaccination history.
Puppies and unvaccinated dogs are most at risk for contracting Canine Distemper
Virus, which can be spread through respiratory droplets, saliva, urine, feces, and
contaminated surfaces/objects. We recommend isolating this dog from other dogs
and monitoring closely over the next 14 days for signs of disease. If clinical signs
are seen, we recommend seeking immediate private veterinary care.
